Major and a Minor Key http://protectyourjoy.com/2011/08/14/major-and-a-minor-key/ http://protectyourjoy.com/2011/08/14/major-and-a-minor-key/#respond Sun, 14 Aug 2011 09:42:56 +0000 http://protectyourjoy.com/?p=149

Life is both a Major and a Minor key is such an eloquent, insightful and punchy lyric. It also reminded me of a story that Dave Stringer told, on one of his trips to Australia. Apparently in the Middle Ages, the use of certain chords, specifically certain intervals of two or more notes that sounded together or in succession were banned. The interval today is written as the notes C and F# and is called a tritone.

There have been many uses of the tritone in modern times by Liszt, Wagner, Sibelius and in even more modern times, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath. Some of it might not be what you would want to play at a kid’s birthday party but … what is it that they say about repressing anger?

Absolutely love this song !

Attitudes to mental ill-health 2011: Stigma and discrimination http://protectyourjoy.com/2011/07/01/attitudes-to-mental-ill-health-2011-stigma-and-discrimination/ http://protectyourjoy.com/2011/07/01/attitudes-to-mental-ill-health-2011-stigma-and-discrimination/#respond Thu, 30 Jun 2011 22:52:45 +0000 http://protectyourjoy.com/?p=139

This month the NHS published findings from a survey of attitudes towards mental illness among adults in England. Although the report suggests that some attitudes towards mental health have improved, there is still evidence that prejudice continues to be prevalent.

Read the report (PDF file 168KB)

Alarmingly, one in six people believe that one of the main causes of mental illness is lack of self-discipline and will-power. Our work aimed at educating the public and raising the awareness of mental health is as vital as ever.

Awesome stuff!

I saw, the founder of the Pathways program, Paula Barrett, speak last Friday at the Generation Next Conference. Some very exciting work in building resilience in kids and adults to things like anxiety and depression.

Apparently 1:5 of us are born psychologically sensitive to Anxiety, but up to our early teens only 50% of those will show signs of Anxiety. If left unchecked, by the time these kids move through the 14 to 25 age group, up to 80% will experience Depression and Anxiety and a range of other symptoms.

Building skills in resilience is like ‘vaccinating’ yourself.

The Greeks understood that mind and body must develop in harmonious proportions to produce a creative intelligence. And so did the most brilliant intelligence of our earliest days – Thomas Jefferson – when he said, not less than two hours a day should be devoted to exercise. If the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence, was Secretary of State, and twice President, could give it two hours, our children can give it ten or fifteen minutes.

I recently saw an article on Kava, authored by Dr Jerome Sarris, about Kava ‘being an effective and safe treatment option for people with chronic anxiety and varying levels of depression’

It got me thinking about when I was at one my lowest points with anxiety and depression and how I was frantically searching for non drug based options to keep things together. A Naturopath suggested Kava to me then, about 8 years ago, and it was tremendously effective. Then a few years back there was a quality issue with some of the Kava that was being produced medicinally, and it was withdrawn from the market.

So it is very exciting to see Jerome’s work here and that the MediHerb product has been given the thumbs up. If you know someone who gets anxiety and is looking for reliable options to help keep things functioning, this could be one to consider.

It’s important to mention that the levels of Kava used in these preparations are designed to help manage conditions not for recreational purposes, just in-case you are worried about a heady display of inappropriate behavior at work.

here is a link to the article on the UQ website:

http://www.uq.edu.au/news/?article=18193

If you have any trouble finding the product I have found a couple of Naturopaths on the Sunshine Coast, who have it, so just shoot me a message and I can give you their details.

Go Well!
