Major and a Minor Key

Life is both a Major and a Minor key is such an eloquent, insightful and punchy lyric. It also reminded me of a story that Dave Stringer told, on one of his trips to Australia. Apparently in the Middle Ages, the use of certain chords, specifically certain intervals of two or more notes that sounded together or in succession were banned. The interval today is written as the notes C and F# and is called a tritone.

There have been many uses of the tritone in modern times by Liszt, Wagner, Sibelius and in even more modern times, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath. Some of it might not be what you would want to play at a kid’s birthday party but … what is it that they say about repressing anger?

Absolutely love this song !

Attitudes to mental ill-health 2011: Stigma and discrimination

This month the NHS published findings from a survey of attitudes towards mental illness among adults in England. Although the report suggests that some attitudes towards mental health have improved, there is still evidence that prejudice continues to be prevalent.

Read the report (PDF file 168KB)

Alarmingly, one in six people believe that one of the main causes of mental illness is lack of self-discipline and will-power. Our work aimed at educating the public and raising the awareness of mental health is as vital as ever.

Pathways for Anxiety

Awesome stuff!

I saw, the founder of the Pathways program, Paula Barrett, speak last Friday at the Generation Next Conference. Some very exciting work in building resilience in kids and adults to things like anxiety and depression.

Apparently 1:5 of us are born psychologically sensitive to Anxiety, but up to our early teens only 50% of those will show signs of Anxiety. If left unchecked, by the time these kids move through the 14 to 25 age group, up to 80% will experience Depression and Anxiety and a range of other symptoms.

Building skills in resilience is like ‘vaccinating’ yourself.

The Greeks understood that mind and body must develop in harmonious proportions to produce a creative intelligence. And so did the most brilliant intelligence of our earliest days – Thomas Jefferson – when he said, not less than two hours a day should be devoted to exercise. If the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence, was Secretary of State, and twice President, could give it two hours, our children can give it ten or fifteen minutes.

Chronic Anxiety – Kava effective and safe

I recently saw an article on Kava, authored by Dr Jerome Sarris, about Kava ‘being an effective and safe treatment option for people with chronic anxiety and varying levels of depression’

It got me thinking about when I was at one my lowest points with anxiety and depression and how I was frantically searching for non drug based options to keep things together. A Naturopath suggested Kava to me then, about 8 years ago, and it was tremendously effective. Then a few years back there was a quality issue with some of the Kava that was being produced medicinally, and it was withdrawn from the market.

So it is very exciting to see Jerome’s work here and that the MediHerb product has been given the thumbs up. If you know someone who gets anxiety and is looking for reliable options to help keep things functioning, this could be one to consider.

It’s important to mention that the levels of Kava used in these preparations are designed to help manage conditions not for recreational purposes, just in-case you are worried about a heady display of inappropriate behavior at work.

here is a link to the article on the UQ website:

http://www.uq.edu.au/news/?article=18193

If you have any trouble finding the product I have found a couple of Naturopaths on the Sunshine Coast, who have it, so just shoot me a message and I can give you their details.

Go Well!

Nick 🙂

Perfect

I know for a fact it has been a trying year or two for many of us and I also know that when times are hard for prolonged periods you begin to doubt yourself – so it is in this vein that I offer you the following Pink lyrics :

Oh, pretty pretty please, don’t you ever ever feel
Like you’re less than f*ckin’ perfect
Pretty pretty please, if you ever ever feel like you’re nothing
You’re f*ckin’ perfect to me

We are already enough and yes we can always be more – Happy Festive Season!

Reading ‘Who Dares for Success’ by Simon Treselyan at the moment – what an outstanding book! One of the books where you read it and say to yourself ‘that’s right, that makes perfect sense … why aren’t I doing that?’

Recommend it to anyone who is in pursuit of any goal – N 🙂

CD’s Positive Spin on Depression Fight

Northern Times – Miranda Forster 23rd July 2010

BRAINFOOD:

Nick Coriat has released a spoken-word CD entitled Eat Your Brain. SPOKEN word CD Eat Your Brain is the culmination of 18 months’ research and a lifetime of experience, according to its author and former depression sufferer Nick Coriat of North Lakes.

The CD, released this week, combines Mr Coriat’s story and the latest research

On how nutrition can help overcome depression, panic and anxiety. The business analyst turned massage therapist said his own recovery from severe depression inspired him to want to help others who were suffering. ‘‘You feel like you’re broken and nothing’s going to help,’’ he said.

‘‘To have gone through and come out the other side, I wanted to help other people understand there are things they can do no matter how bad things get.’’

Mr Coriat tracked down three US experts on nutrition and the brain, and incorporated the information along with his own story, on the 45-minute CD.

‘‘It’s not just an academic standpoint, it’s not just me saying ‘I think this might

work’,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve gone through it and it has worked and I’ve gone back to research it. ‘It’s about simplicity. It’s not learning Russian, it’s a few basic things that apply the principles.’’
